After Kenzie was off to work, Zachary sat at his computer again to see what he should tackle next. He kept an eye on the time, but was still startled out of his work later by the alarms he had set.

While he knew it wouldn’t make her feel any better about his forgetting lunch with Kenzie the day before, he wanted to do something nice for her, so he arranged for a pickup from her favorite pizza place—not Thai two days in a row—and took it over to her at the medical examiner’s office.

He had ordered an extra-large so that there was enough for anyone who happened to be in the office that day. It wasn’t a big office, but he wanted to ensure he was covered if a couple of extra people were there.

Kenzie’s eyes got big, and she shook her head, smiling. “You know this doesn’t make up for forgetting.”

“I know.”

“But it’s nice,” she admitted. “Come on; we’ll put it out in the boardroom. The kitchen counter is too crowded.”

Zachary put down the pizza box, opened it, and set out the plates and napkins from the pizza place while Kenzie walked around to inform everyone that there was pizza. By the time she finished making her rounds, a couple of employees were already helping themselves. Zachary didn’t know everyone in the medical examiner’s office, but recognized George, a large man who helped with transportation and preparing bodies for autopsy. And probably some other duties that Zachary was unaware of, since that would not keep him busy most of the time.

George lifted a slice of pizza to his mouth to take a bite, and then addressed Zachary as he chewed it.

“So what did you do?”

“What did I do?”

“Well, pizza isn’t exactly anniversary fare, and I’ve never seen you bring it before, so what did you do? You’re in the doghouse for something, aren’t you?”

Zachary rolled his eyes. He was supposed to be the detective, not George. “Yes. Missed a date we had set up. Was at a client’s and lost track of time.”

“Lost track of time?” Kenzie repeated, helping herself to a slice.

“Lost track of time and forgot all about it,” he admitted.

George chuckled. “Not a good way to keep the girl, Mr. Goldman.”

“I know. That’s why I had to do the pizza thing.”

“Lucky for us,” George approved. “It should be mandatory that we get pizza in at least once a month.”

“As long as it’s not on my dime. Or because I’m in trouble.”
